Vivo X50 Pro Review and Specifications

Previously, we were familiar with Gimbal technology as an additional accessory separate from smartphones. This device is very helpful for video capture to be stable. For some people, it may be less practical, because they have to bring additional devices. Then comes the vivo X50 series in the first half of 2020, with the vivo X50 Pro the star. Vivo X50 Pro is not the best variant in terms of chipset usage. But this series has adopted Gimbal Stabilization technology, which was previously introduced in prototype smartphones, APEX 2020. Not just a gimmick, the alias can indeed improve the quality of videos and photos significantly. And still paired with other camera sensors with complete setup.

For more than one week using vivo X50 Pro as a daily driver, this technology is not the only feature that makes me amazed with this smartphone. Overall, this device presents a complete package, for a smartphone with medium specifications that are sold at a premium price. Is this device suitable for everyone? Of course not. Here are my complete impressions about the Vivo X50 Pro.

Vivo X50 Pro Design Review

Weighing less than 200 grams, aka only about 180 grams. This is arguably quite impressive, considering that the Gimbal module itself has taken up far more space than conventional OIS technology. Side corners are made slightly curved with a combination of rear glass made doff or frosted, aka not easily soiled by fingerprints.

Alpha Gray variants seem to have a palette of blue and gray colors, changing according to the catch of light. The camera design does look like it does, but it’s also the same as other flagship smartphones with large or large sensors. There are slight deficiencies in the absence of water resistance certification, even when the dual SIM slot is removed, it looks vivo provides an extra rubber layer to clog the entry of water.

Screen

In size, the vivo X50 Pro’s screen is arguably quite large at 6.56 inches. But this smartphone feels relatively small when held. This is because the screen ratio is quite high, the use of curved screens, small punch-hole dimensions and four very thin bezels. The AMOLED panel used has a full HD + resolution with a pixel density reaching 398 ppi. Color reproduction is quite good and abundant typical AMOLED panels, and already supports HDR10 + content. vivo also provides three color mode options and temperature settings to suit the user. The curved sides on the left and right are not too big, but it is enough to make the front appearance look luxurious.

And according to the flagship standard, the screen supports a 90Hz refresh rate with 180Hz touch sampling. All content displayed will look smoother, including Instagram and Twitter timelines. Used in the sun is also not a problem, the content on the screen is able to look well. Likewise with the vibration motor, it is quite smooth though not the best in its class. The always-on display option is of course also present in Vivo X50 Pro. This situation is similar to the previous ColorOS, which has then been addressed through OS updates.

The fingerprint sensor has also been embedded under the screen, and is quite accurate during testing. Face unlock option is of course also available, which automatically turns on the screen when in a dark room. The face unlock feature also works smoothly. But strangely, it can still detect faces even though I’m wearing a mask. So if you prioritize security, it’s better to use in-display fingerprint instead.

Gimbal camera

There are four camera sensors embedded in the body behind the Vivo X50 Pro, each of which is the main sensor 48MP, 13MP portrait, 8MP telephoto and 8MP ultra-wide. All four are accompanied by an autofocus laser and triple-LED dual-tone flash. Let’s discuss the main camera first. vivo X50 Pro uses a sensor from Sony, the IMX598 48MP with f / 1.6 aperture and 0.8um pixel size. This is the only sensor that is equipped with a micro-gimbal system, which is claimed to be 3x better than a regular OIS. In a quiet situation, the mechanism can feel or sound like it is moving, because this is indeed a stabilization in the type of hardware.

In the settings menu, there is a special calibration menu which, if pressed, will move the sensor in various directions. Also provided a radar on the screen to indicate whether the Gimbal are stable at the midpoint or other.

Nevertheless, this Gimbal technology still needs to be tested whether the results differ greatly when compared with competitors. For example, Samsung, OPPO, and Huawei, which have their respective names for the ultra stabilizer technology (super steady, ultra steady, etc.). By default, captured images have a 12MP resolution, but there is an option to capture photos in 48MP full resolution.

The 8MP f / 2.2 ultra-wide camera benefits from laser autofocus, and can be used to take close-up photos of objects up to a distance of 2.5cm. The quality tends to be mediocre, with details that of course decline and tend to be subtle. Which is somewhat uncomfortable, when you want to photograph an object closely from the main camera sensor, the smartphone automatically switches the camera to ultra-wide with macro mode.

Then there is the 13MP f / 2.5 50mm camera with 2x optical zoom, which is referred to as a portrait lens. When entering portrait mode, it will automatically switch to this one camera (although the user can change it to 1x). Taking portrait photos using the Vivo X50 Pro is quite pleasant with satisfying results. Except for some parts of the photo is still not quite right in the separation between the object and background, especially around the hair and glasses.

There is an issue that I experience is how this smartphone takes focus. In the camera application itself, Vivo provides a variety of focus features such as object detection to object eyes. But not infrequently when taking portrait photos, the end result displays the wrong focus point, or even when taking photos from the viewfinder. Indeed, the focus point can be fixed after taking a photo. But this issue is also sometimes experienced also on video.

How about the quality of the night photo? Gimbal stabilization is very helpful for producing good photos with abundant detail. The existence of a Gimbal make smartphones can use a longer shutter, so that more light can be captured by sensors. Even with the night mode which takes 3-4 seconds to take, my hands don’t have to be 100% completely still to produce a steady photo. If it’s really stable, the smartphone automatically detects the tripod mode and prolongs the shutter to 10 seconds.

When in dark lighting conditions, the Vivo X50 Pro will automatically offer Extreme Night Vision mode. The result? Here is a display of the actual lighting conditions of the viewfinder, and the catches of the vivo X50 Pro camera. Up behind my friend, the gym was also visible inside the building. The night mode on the Vivo X50 Pro not only makes light, but also enhances photo details. Also works on three other camera sensors.

While the 32MP f / 2.5 front camera on the Vivo X50 Pro has results that tend to be smooth, as if the beauty effect can’t be completely removed. Night mode can also be used on the front camera. Another point I also need to mention about the front camera: the quality is good when used for video calls via Google Duo. Because not many smartphones with high resolution front cameras can optimize quality during video calls.

The rear camera of the Vivo X50 Pro is capable of recording videos up to 4K 30fps resolution. In 1080p recording mode, we can switch from ultra-wide lens to 5x zoom while recording video. While the Ultra Stable mode automatically changes the resolution to 1080p 60fps.

When used to record chilli sauce, the results tend to be mediocre, aka the same as other smartphones that use OIS and EIS. But the stabilizing effect of the new Gimbal will feel very stable when we walk on uneven surfaces such as going up and down stairs, for example. Or running even at night, with the Vivo X50 Pro still able to produce stable video without the blur that is usually dominant when EIS is used. Feature

In my opinion, the previous version of Funtouch is one of the most unappealing ones. Impressed very mimic the appearance of the iOS interface, as if it does not have the identity or character itself. But now it is much better with Funtouch 10.5 based on Android 10.

It looks much cleaner without unnecessary elements. The application icon is also not tacky, more elegant and in accordance with its modern smartphone design. Want to use it right away, you can. You can also customize it further — even VIVO provides a special menu to change the effects of animation such as when the screen is on, fingerprint detection until when the charger is plugged into the USB-C port.

I also like the choice of live wallpapers provided by Vivo X50 Pro, not a few friends who were impressed when I first saw the home screen display with a moving wallpaper. A simple thing that adds to the selling value. But there are some drawbacks that I think can be improved by vivo going forward.

First, the downward sliding gesture on the home screen cannot be changed to bring down the notification bar. Then the Dark Mode display automatically also turns third-party applications into dark, making the appearance of the Twitter application interface a little less clear. And when using full gesture navigation, vivo does not provide free space under the virtual keyboard, so the keyboard becomes too low because the bottom bezel is very slim.

And I also found no option to keep the application running normally without special optimization. So I have to access the WearOS application for the trigger so that the connection is running again. It’s rare, but it happens several times a week.

Already supports Hi-Fi audio, you will not find a 3.5mm audio jack on this smartphone, so you must use a converter or wireless audio device. Unfortunately, when I connected to several TWS devices, I didn’t find the option for the AAC format in the Bluetooth menu. So the sound output is still less detailed. While the mono speaker below has an average sound output.

Performance

vivo points to Qualcomm’s newest and highest middle class processor, the Snapdragon 765G which has an octa-core CPU base up to 2.4GHz clockspeed and Adreno 620 GPU. Combined with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage which is relatively fast, there is no performance or heat disruption at all when using this smartphone everyday.

Even though I used a smartphone with a Snapdragon 865 chipset, I don’t feel that there is a significant decrease in performance. Even playing games is still comfortable. Most noticeable only when opening an application or game, pauses for a fraction of a second longer. Or when taking photos with portrait and burst effects, it takes a few seconds when you want to see it directly, like on other smartphones that use Snapdragon 845.

Especially with a high refresh rate, navigating on this smartphone feels responsive and smooth. But indeed, it cannot be denied, many other smartphones use better chipsets at the same price range. If you really want to find a smartphone with the best performance, this is certainly not the main selling point of the Vivo X50 Pro, although it is also not slow. Oh yes, this chipset already supports 5G.

Battery

Even though the dimensions are quite thin, vivo can still embed a rather large battery capacity of 4,315 mAh on the vivo X50 Pro. The capacity is more or less sufficient for use in one full day, even with quite intensive though.

Remove the charger from 7 am, I use this smartphone by turning on AOD, setting the screen to 90Hz and activating other connectivity sensors such as Bluetooth and NFC. The battery is still around 9-11% at the end of the night. If you are very intensive in recording video or taking photos, it will run out before nightfall.

Supports FlashCharge 2.0 vivo technology that runs at 33 watts, charging using the default charger is fairly short. 30 minutes has reached more than 50%, while for a full charge takes about 70 minutes. Unfortunately, when I charge using a 65 watt GaN charger, the fast charging feature isn’t active. Mark if this device is not backward compatible with PD or QC.

Conclusion

Looks like this year is the right time for Vivo Indonesia to finally present a flagship class smartphone, the Vivo X50 Pro. This smartphone is worthy of juxtaposed with other competitors at the price of a class, able to offer features that are no less complete, wrapped with a very premium design. Gimbal Stabilization technology that is brought is able to significantly improve video quality, and also helps users to take night photos without the need for excessive effort for good results. Not only for videography, but also suitable for those who pursue a hobby of photography.

On the other hand, the chipset isn’t the fastest, it’s not yet waterproof, and some elements of the Funtouch OS still need to be improved, even though it’s far better than before. If you really want to be serious in videography and are curious about the Gimbal technology, you have to spend less.
